Hypa Rush, Belizeans Kick Off Carnival Season
Soca in June? Belizeans rarely need an excuse to party, but this weekend marks the official start of the soca and carnival season. Six of Belize’s top soca performers – Ernestine Carballo; Leslie “Bastic” Jenkins; Boss Lady, Missy B, Wilson Grinage and T.R. Shine – will share the stage at Flavaz Entertainment’s Soca Kick-off Concert at the ITVET Grounds on Saturday night, but the head-liner is Barbados’ own Hypa Sounds, a ten-year veteran looking to break into the mainstream. He already has a regional hit, “Sugar Rush”, and today he told News Five that he is looking to charm the ladies and steal the show on Saturday.
Hypa Sounds, Performer
“What the crowd can expect tomorrow night is just vibes. Ladies, come out; the Kid is in town – this is one time you can just tell the mister that Hypa Sounds is in town tonight, no worry, no fret; or you can bring him along. Have a good time, but you can look out for that energy, pure vibes and I am just ready. And also I want to take in some of the music from Belize and check out the artists because you never know what can happen.”
Andazi, Public Relations, Flavaz Entertainment
“We started this about four years ago – everybody was like, ‘Soca eena June?” but now everybody is excited about soca in June. We are launching the carnival season, bringing awareness to the fact that these carnival bands are working hard all year round, it’s not just about September. So all the carnival bands are going to be out there. We have our top six Belizean soca artists; they’re going to be bringing a live show for you guys; we collaborated with Kendoyll Simpson and they are going to be playing with a live band – it’s going to be the first time we have all six artists with a live band at ITVET; and then we have Hypa Rush out of Barbados and we will top it off with Pantempters Steel Band; it’s going to be a non-stop party tomorrow night at ITVET.”
Doors open at nine and the party goes until three a.m. Sunday morning. Get your tickets from the carnival bands for thirty dollars general admission and seventy-five dollars VIP seating, or from L.A. Fashions, J’Adore Studio Boutique, The Real Barber Shop and Wave Radio.
