Greenwood wins top spot of B.C.I.A.
The latest round in the cruise ship war goes to Tom Greenwood and those boat owners trying to prevent the introduction of larger tenders to the industry. Confirming the unconstitutionality of a recent attempt to oust him, Greenwood was re-elected president of the Belize Cruiseship Industry Association at the B.C.I.A.’s annual general meeting held last night at the Radisson. Elected as officers were Ramon Cervantes as Vice-President, Martha Williams as Secretary and Richard Marin as Treasurer, as well as nine directors. The association is expected to continue in its efforts to keep out the two hundred passenger catamarans, which it says will destroy the livelihood of dozens of existing boat owners and place an important element of the industry under outside control.
In related news, sources indicate to News 5 that deals are nearly final on the sale of the Tourism Village by the Feinstein Group to Royal Caribbean Cruise Line, and the establishment of a cruise port on the city’s southside by Carnival Cruise Lines in partnership with Luke Espat’s Port of Belize Limited. How both developments will operate simultaneously is anybody’s guess.
