Police detain two for Corozal murder

Story Picture
Corozal police have still not made any arrests in connection with the brutal murder of thirty-four year old Wilfrido Baeza. Around six on Saturday evening, authorities responded to a call that led them to Baeza’s house at Fourth Street North. Upstairs of the two storey building they found Baeza’s body inside his bathtub with what appeared to be gunshots to the head and back. Police say they do not know Baeza to be involved in criminal activities; in fact the victim, an amputee, is described as someone who basically kept to himself. The victim’s family, who did not wish to speak to us on camera, said Baeza was taking a shower when he was killed and that his common law wife, Tomasa Villanueva, was home at the time of the murder. Although word on the street is that Baeza was killed by someone he knew well, police declined to name a suspect. According to the officer in charge of the Corozal police station, Superintendent Yolanda Murray, one thing they are sure of is that whoever committed the murder did not have much difficulty getting inside the house.

“And Mr. Baeza was found inside his bathroom?”

Supt. Yolanda Murray

“Yes, inside his bathroom.”

Jacqueline Woods

“So the door was wide open?”

Supt. Yolanda Murray

“Well I cannot say that, but there was no sign of forcible entry.”

Jacqueline Woods

“What is the police doing to help solve this latest crime in Corozal?”

Supt. Yolanda Murray

“Well investigation. We have picked up two suspects already and we will continue our investigation. We don’t know how fruitful it will be, but we are working on it and hopefully we will arrest somebody; that is what we are fighting for.”

Corozal police would not comment on what Tomasa Villanueva told them, only that she is not in custody and is staying with relatives.
