Writing ACE Curriculum for Online Study

This morning, stakeholders in the Adult Continuing Education sector began the first day of a workshop geared towards curriculum writers. The idea is to convert as many as fourteen courses to e-subjects that can be studied online. It’s a process that has been introduced elsewhere in the primary school curriculum, but is for the first time being prepared for adult learners. Doctor Sheldon Samuels, the National ACE Coordinator, further explains the purpose of the seminar.

“This workshop today is very essential. It’s historic in all proportion because of the fact that we are taking thirty-nine teachers from across the evening division institution and the ITVET to come together and to write secondary subjects to e-subjects. In fact, there are fourteen subjects that will be written to e-subjects. There are, I think it‘s ten secondary subjects and four technical subject areas. So it is very important because what that does is to say to the out-of-school population and even the secondary school students that there is no excuse in the future for not being able to actually get access to your material, to your assignments or to your notes because these subject areas will be written to e-subjects and will be placed on a platform under the management system.”

“Okay, so we know that the ministry has been taking steps in the past few months to, you know, move over to this online format. Tell us about the importance, you know, how important it is for us to actually, you know, switch over and broaden the access.”

“Well I‘m not sure if it’s switching over. I think it‘s additional. And one of the goals of the Ministry of Education is really to create more access to the out-of-school population which I can speak to very much. We have a huge percentage of our population that is out of school but they are desirous about going back to school. But because of many of challenges that they found, maybe their jobs be very engaging.”
The curriculum writers training and content development project continues at the ITVET on Tuesday.
