Quartet Charged for 60 Pounds of Weed
The illegal marijuana trade continues to flourish, as the prohibited substance remains the recreational drug of choice for a number of Belizeans. Local demand for weed has led to a significant increase in wholesale supply, a fact that is evidenced in a sizeable bust on Sunday evening. At approximately six-thirty p.m., a joint operation involving personnel from the police department’s Quick Response Team and Special Branch cut off a gold colored Chevy Equinox traveling along the Bypass Road in the Orange Walk District. The vehicle was headed in the direction of Belize City when it was intercepted.
Seated inside the midsize SUV were nineteen-year-old Joshua Hall, thirty-eight-year-old George Franzua, twenty-one-year-old Randolph Crawford and twenty-year-old Jose Worrell. All four men are residents of Corozal Town. A subsequent search of the vehicle led to the discovery of three tightly wrapped parcels containing cannabis. The total weight of the cargo amounted to roughly twenty-eight kilograms, the equivalent of sixty-one pounds of marijuana. The men have been since been charged with drug trafficking.
