Guardian/Housing Dept. eliminated from Inter-Office semi-finals

Story PictureGood evening, I’m James Adderley welcoming you to this portion of Sports Monday.

Round ten of the B.P.F.L. Football Tournament took us West yesterday to the Norman Broaster Stadium where the battle for the lead in the south zone raged as Hankook Verdes hosted the tough George Town Ibayani. The home team looks to strike early when Daniel Jimenez singles out Marlon Mesa, whose attempt to score is foiled by brave goalkeeping from Allan Flores. The visitors respond with this center into the danger zone from Dalton Eiley to Lisbey Castillo who thinks he’s fouled on this denial by the Verdes defense. Eighteen minutes into the ballgame, Marlon Mesa mounts this run, beats one man and beats the goalkeeper with this left foot to give Hankook Verdes the 1-zip lead. Some twenty minutes later, this long distance dial from Dennis Alvarez threatens to tie the score but Jamie Brooks comes up with a successful intervention. In early second half play, Marlon Mesa unleashes this right foot that rises over the goal posts. We’re at the sixty-second minute when Daniel Jimenez penetrates into the penalty box defended by Georgetown and then splices this ball to Marlon Mesa who gets his second of the match to make it 2-zip for Verdes. In the meantime, watch Jaime Brooks get up to take care of this long distance dial from outside the eighteen. At the eighty-ninth minute, Marlon Mesa outruns Luis Roano and finds the far corner with this low cruise missile to complete the hat trick and lead Hankook Verdes to a 3-zip big W over Georgetown.

Other results from round ten show that F.C. Belize doubled San Pedro Dolphins 4-2, Suga Boys Juventus stopped the San Pedro Bullsharks 3-1, Nizhee Corozal blanked the B.D.F. 1-zip, Scorpions stung Tafari 3-2 and Wagiya whipped Llagulei 5-1. Thus, the standings look like this. In the south, Hankook Verdes with twenty-four points leads the zone on goal differential since Georgetown Ibayani also shows twenty-four points. Scorpions show fifteen points, Wagiya twelve, while Llagulei and Tafari have amassed seven points apiece. Meanwhile, in the North, undefeated F.C. Belize is boss with twenty-two points, the B.D.F. has sixteen, Nizhee Corozal fifteen, Suga Boys thirteen, San Pedro Bullsharks eleven and San Pedro Dolphins are in the cellar with four.

The camp, which will be staged at the St. Martin De Porres football field here in Belize City begins July sixth and extends to August eighth, exclusively for boys and girls between the ages of eight to seventeen. Registration has already begun and admission will be done on a first come, first serve basis. Forms can be obtained at thirty-seven Zericote Street, Belize City.

Now let’s head to the Civic Center where the Inter-Office Basketball League completed the sudden death round of the eight team playoffs Friday night. We are in the second quarter as Guardian/Housing Department leads Atlantic Bank by four points in the second quarter when Darwin Elijio finds Andrew Staine with the long pass for the easy lay up. Elijio then comes down on this press to knock down the baby jumper. Still at the half, Guardian/Housing is up 25-23. In the third, it’s Andrew Staine going through the teeth of the Guardian defense for two more points. Staine would finish with eleven points. However, Egbert Walford has the hot hand for the Housing Department as he knocks down one of his three, three pointers. Walford would lead his team with thirteen points. Walford then turns provider for Dwayne Davis who strikes for two of his ten game points right here. Bernard Felix also gets into the act. He would finish with ten points also. At the end of three, the Guardian lead is nine. In the fourth quarter, Atlantic Bank comes alive. Dave Apolonio gives his team two needed points right here. This bucket by Darwin Elijio gives Atlantic Bank its first lead of the ballgame. Staine streaks in for two big points on this move and we’re tied at forty-six points apiece people. Linsworth Graham breaks the tie with this banker off the glass. Atlantic Bank goes on to eliminate Guardian/Housing Department 51-48 and are into the semi-finals round.

In the meantime folks, the nightcap matched six and one B.W.S. Pressure against five and two Belize City Council and it’s Kenroy Usher who would have an M.V.P. type outing for the council starting with this three pointer. At the other end, Fenton Noralez finds big man Karim Thompson who gets his team going with this jumper. But keep your eyes on Kenroy ‘MVP’ Usher who hits again. MVP Usher would finish with the game high of twenty-four points as the City Council runs to a 17-9 lead in the first quarter. The James Brothers battle each other for this rebound but it’s Keith who beats Marvin and gets the put back to fall. Keith James would put up seven points for B.W.S. Karim Thompson works his way down low for two more Pressure points. Karim would total sixteen points to lead his team. Nevertheless, at the other end Randall Hinks sports up for three and at the end of the second quarter, BCC shows a 27-21 lead. Gadsden Ferguson then wants three… he gets three to give his team a ten point lead. At the end of three, the lead is 39-33. In the fourth Marvin James finds Virgil Miller who goes left hand for two. Butta Miller would put up ten points and eight rebounds. Will Mr. MVP please stand up. So Kenroy Usher answers that call. Folks, Belize Water Services simply does not have any pressure tonight as Belize City Council goes on to post the 53-43 big W.
