What’s in Police’s Won Hong Kim File? ComPol Doesn’t Know
The Senate hearing continued into this afternoon where the Commissioner of Police Allen Whylie gave testimony. The other major investigation to be carried out by the Police Department was in relation to Won Hong Kim. Auditor General Dorothy Bradley is on record as asking for police investigation into the irregularities that caused the fugitive businessman turned prisoner to obtain Belizean nationality and a passport. The news tonight is that the matter has been closed in terms of an investigation, but Commissioner Whylie states that he cannot say more than that.
Mark Lizarraga, Pro-tem Chair, Senate Special Select Committee
“On page six of the Auditor General Report, the Auditor General finds that there was an abundance of suspicious circumstances which indicated the commission of an offense in the granting of nationality and passport to Won Hong Kim. And then she makes recommendations on page thirty-six, Commissioner, where she recommends that the investigation continues with respect to this Won Hong Kim passport. So Commissioner, what is the position of the Police Department in this regard?”
Allen Whylie, Commissioner of Police
“The Won Hong Kim matter was investigated by the Police Department and the investigation has concluded.”
Mark Lizarraga
“And what is the status in regard to the role of Minister Elvin Penner?”
Allen Whylie
“Again, as I indicated earlier, I did not pursue that investigation simply because of the fact, as I said, of the earlier issues. I have not read the file.”
Eamon Courtenay, P.U.P. Senator
“I think we need to be fair to you; when you say you haven’t pursued it, what do you mean by that?”
Allen Whylie
“What I mean is, I personally have not read the file, so I can’t say what was the outcome. What I can say is that the matter was investigated by the team, a file was compiled; they had met several times with the D.P.P. over that file, certain additional things were requested, those [things] were acquired and they are in the file. But I personally didn’t read the file; that’s what I mean.”
