Accident in front of fire kills cyclist
While villagers came out to help put out the school fire on Saturday afternoon, a passer-by ended up losing his life as a result of a traffic accident in front of the burning building. Thirty-two year old Marlon Henderson was riding his motorcycle on the Northern Highway toward Belize City when he collided with a pickup truck. The details are not entirely clear, but Henderson’s brother told News 5 that the accident was relatively minor and never should have resulted in death.

The person weh knock ah down apparently mi deh inna a hurry to reach Biscayne school, because Biscayne school mi deh pan fire. So dah mi just wah accident waiting to happen weh nobody could prevent.

If somebody out deh mi just tek it pan dem fi just get piece a cloth and just tie my bredda foot, cause they can’t stop the bleeding, but just slow it down, my Bredda mi wah the breathe right now.”
Late this evening, News 5 spoke with one of the occupants of the pickup truck involved in Saturday’s accident who told us that the vehicle had slowed down to allow traffic to clear so they could turn off the highway into the school yard. According to Janet Cal, the oncoming bike was travelling at a high rate of speed when it clipped the front driver’s side of her husband’s vehicle. Cal says the impact threw Henderson over two hundred feet away. No charges have so far been brought against the driver of the pickup, Rogel Cal, although he was detained for questioning. Family members say Henderson was able to communicate with his mother by telephone before his death and that his only request was that she come to see him. Henderson died in the ambulance en route to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital. He leaves behind his parents, common law wife and three children.
