Story Picture
On Sunday many Belizean men will enjoy the fruits of Father’s Day. But for one select group of dads–and moms–the occasion arrived a few days early. Jacqueline Woods reports.

It may be Friday the thirteenth, but for the homeless of Belize City, the day held some good fortune. The men and women stood in line at the Battlefield Park to receive free food and drink courtesy of the Belize City Council.

Jenny Craig, Councillor, Community Participation

“Well we are giving back to the society. What we have here is a Father’s Day programme, we had a service at Central Assembly of God and now we’re giving back to the society by feeding the homeless here at Battlefield Park. Not necessarily the fathers, but all the homeless people that you see that hang out here in the park.”

Newly appointed Councillor of Community Participation and Social Services, Jenny Craig, says she is very much concerned about people who are homeless, especially those persons who are living with HIV and AIDS. Craig says one aspect of her immediate plan is to provide shelter for those persons living with the disease.

“Under my portfolio, I was given the opportunity to send a proposal up to the mayor. We are trying to get funding to construct and erect a home for the HIV and AIDS victims here in our country, and so far that venture has been positive.”

Today’s meal programme catered to one hundred and fifty persons. Jacqueline Woods for News 5.
