Maya Centre resort burns to ground
It is the blessing and curse of many tourism facilities scattered across the country…remote locations. But distance was not necessarily a factor in the destruction of a resort in the Stann Creek District early Monday evening. According to Gregorio Chun, Manager of Tu Tzil Nah Resort, located near Maya Centre Village at mile thirteen on the Southern Highway, just after seven that night he saw the hotel completely engulfed in flames. By the time the police arrived on the scene, the hotel’s several thatch-roofed wooden buildings had burned to the ground. Estimates of damage to the property are approximately eighty-two thousand dollars. News 5 understands the resort was not insured. It is believed that investigators are looking for a possible arsonist as the first building to catch fire was unoccupied and was not equipped with any cooking appliances.
