Tyler Savery Foundation Helps Kids Get Back to School

The Tyler Savery Foundation distributed close to one hundred school bags to under-privileged children. The kids were treated to a fun day at the pool at the Pickwick Club and they each received backpacks with school supplies for the new school year. We spoke with the founder, Shakera Young. She explains why she decided to reach out to children with the educational gifts.

“The initiative is basically to share some love withthe kids are basically kids that we believe are deserving kids and that they don’t necessarily have the means and we so we are blessing them with a backpack with supplies. The main reason why is because I lost my son to violence and I have my foundation after I lost my son – the Tyler Savery Foundation. And what I want to do now – because that person that shot my son is eighteen and I realize that something went wrong with him along the way. What I wanted to do is to do something better for these kids so that they know that somebody loves them. I wanted to get people involved from the community, as well as the parents and members of the church to show the kids love; so that they could feel that love and know that they are loved and they don’t have to go out there to look for love at the wrong places.”

“How many kids are benefitting from this initiative?”

“Today we have possible head count of about a hundred kids. We also have adults coming out today to bring their kids. The reason why I choose to do a pool day is because we want to create memories. Memories we cannot take away from them, so as long as they live, they will know that I did this and this is what I did for the summer.”

The Tyler Savery Foundation’s back to school initiative received donations from the Choice Bank, Councilor Dion Leslie and U.S. resident Cynthia Sparkle.
