U.B. move to Belmopan postponed
The relocation of a number of major components of the University of Belize from Belize City to Belmopan will have to wait a few months longer. In a release issued today the Ministry of Education and U.B.’s board have announced that the move, originally set for the beginning of the academic year in August, has been pushed back to January. Reasons given for the postponement were concerns by students and faculty, particularly over the issue of transportation. The university has pledged to address these problems over the next six months. Proponents of the relocation emphasize the need for the university to establish a full fledged central residential campus, while opponents argue that the practical effect of such a move would be to make education more expensive and inconvenient for the majority of students, many of whom commute daily from the northern districts or live and hold jobs in Belize City.
