Police constable injured in early morning shooting
A police constable was shot early this morning in the line of duty. It happened when the twenty-four year old Mervin Polonio headed back home from New Town Barracks to his residence on Berkley Street to pick up some food. Polonio says that as he entered his yard, he heard a gunshot and soon realized he had been shot. The perpetrator could not be located and Police Press Officer, Clement Palacio, says the police are looking at all angles.
Clement Palacio, Police Press Officer
“A police officer was wounded by a firearm and that matter is under investigation.”
Duane Moody
“Where was he shot sir?”
Clement Palacio
“It is alleged that he was shot in an area near his home.”
Duane Moody
“And which part did the bullet make impact?”
Clement Palacio
“I believe the release says on his wrist.”
Duane Moody
“Do you know the calibre of the gun that was used?”
Clement Palacio
“That would be a part of the investigation and you would note that the officer in question was on patrol in another area of Belize City.”
Duane Moody
“Has he since been released form the hospital?”
Clement Palacio
“I’m not aware of his condition as of this morning when he was stable in the Belize City hospital.”
Duane Moody
“Does he know of anyone who might have wanted him dead or anything of that sort?”
Clement Palacio
“Well, again as I mentioned, it’s an investigation that is being done at the present moment.”
No one has been detained for the crime.
