Ex-Lands Minister says he helped many get land too

Vega, during a brief interview with the media, also attempted to explain the situation at the Lands Department while he was in office and the many efforts he purportedly made to encourage Belizeans to purchase and own properties across the country.

“If you review all the messages that I gave while the distribution of, like I said, tens of thousands of leases, because I can only distribute leases.  In every speech I encourage, I encouraged every single receiver, every single recipient of a land paper, to ensure that they purchase their land.  I went as far as going to Cabinet and lobby, lobby with my colleagues to ensure that they bring down the prices from what used to be thirty-five hundred dollars for a little house lot, especially for the most needy, to seven or eight hundred dollars, just to ensure that the people receive their titles.  That‘s how far I went because I know, I know that a lot of people didn‘t dream of getting a lease, much less a title for seven or eight hundred dollars.”
