P.U.P. Wants ‘Best’ Team for City Municipals
The race to the 2018 municipal elections will resume in earnest in the coming weeks. While the People’s United Party has candidates in place in the north and west, all eyes will be on the eleven Opposition candidates who will face off against the four-term United Democratic Party slate in Belize City. According to P.U.P. Party Leader John Briceño, more than ten candidates have signed up but there is no indication of whether the convention will be contested or an endorsement. But he did say that the P.U.P. will be ready to take on the U.D.P. in the Old Capital.
John Briceño, P.U.P. Leader
“We do have more than ten candidates. But for us I know that Belize City is the garrison of the U.D.P.; they have spent over two hundred million dollars of our taxpayers’ money in Belize City and they want to make sure that they have an impregnable fort. So for us to be able to penetrate Belize City, to be able to break down that fort they have, that garrison they have built with over two hundred million dollars that they have spent over the past nine years, we need to make sure that we have a good team. We have candidates – we have more than enough – but we want to make sure that we put that right balance, so that we can have a team that would have the credibility, that would have the experience, and that would have the love for their city, that they would be offering themselves for the right reasons: a team that even you might vote for. So that’s why we are taking our time because we want to make sure that we get it right.”
