Caribbean artists compete to win U.S. $25,000 each

Story Picture
Artists all over the world, even talented men and women, have found that it’s difficult to prosper from their romanticized profession. So when an offer like the one in this next story comes along, interest peaks, especially when there’s twenty-five thousand U.S. dollars on the line. CLICO, Colonial Life Insurance Company, based in Trinidad, has announced that their 2004 calendar will feature the work of twelve Caribbean artists. Men and women from throughout the region are asked to submit their best work no later than July thirty-first, 2003. Known for its breathtaking images, the CLICO calendar has included the work of renowned Caribbean artists such as Rafael Alba, Enrique Mora and Jackie Hinkson. According to the rules, the 2004 calendar will capture “Twelve Visuals of the Caribbean Dream”, demonstrating the beauty and vibrancy of Caribbean life. The pieces should depict a festive, historic or cultural event, landmark, landscape, seascape, flora, fauna, etcetera. Executive Chairman of CLICO, Lawrence Duprey, explains his company’s hopes for the calendar.

Lawrence Duprey, Executive Chairman, CLICO

“Our 2004 calendar emphasises our regional vision. But in order for integration to become a reality, there must also be a vision of what it means to be Caribbean. This we believe is what art can do, and this is one of the reasons why we promote the region’s artists through our company’s calendar. It is my great pleasure to announce formally today that CLICO will be sponsoring this region-wide competition to choose twelve prime paintings from around the Caribbean for use in our 2004 calendar. Each winning artist will receive twenty-five thousand United States dollars. By making the general public aware of our artists, and through sponsorship, showing that art can be a real and respected profession, we hope that we can turn the minds of more our young people to express themselves in creative avenues.”

Belizean artists should submit their entries to British Fidelity Assurance Company at number sixty Park Street in Belize City, no later than July thirty-first. The work should be oil or acrylic on canvas or watercolour. The piece should be unframed and easily transportable. Artists should include the title of the work, their name, address, contact phone numbers, a photograph of themselves and a short biography. Each of the twelve winning artists will receive twenty-five thousand U.S. dollars.
