Hit and run injures cop at checkpoint

Meanwhile, a Corozal man is detained tonight pending charges for the hit and run of a police officer. On Sunday evening, Sergeant Francisco Ack and several other colleagues were manning a checkpoint near Trial Farm, just north of Orange Walk Town on the Northern Highway. Around six-twenty, a cane truck approached the officers, but instead of slowing down, barrelled through at full speed. Ack was hit by the vehicle and rushed to the Northern Regional Hospital for treatment. The other cops on the scene gave chase to the runaway truck, catching up to it two miles away. The driver has been identified as thirty-one year old Edilberto Gutierrez of San Victor Village in the Corozal District. Tonight Gutierrez is enjoying the hospitality of the Orange Walk police. As for his victim, Sergeant Ack has been transferred to the K.H.M.H. in critical condition having suffered a broken right arm, fractured ribs, a large cut wound to the back of the head.
