A.G.: Justice will be done in traffic pileup

Meanwhile, the Belizean legal community, and indeed, the public at large, has been abuzz this week with speculation on how the case of Monday’s four-car traffic pileup, believed to be caused by the Director of Public Prosecutions, will play out. According to Attorney General Godfrey Smith, the situation is unusual but it will be handled just like any other police or judicial matter.

“If there is a situation where anybody in the D.P.P.’s office comes under investigation and has to be prosecuted, then that person would stand down from being involved in that process in the D.P.P.’s office and somebody else would have to take it up.”

“So it would be like working against your boss at that point though, wouldn’t it be?”

“As we maintain, whether it’s your boss or otherwise, we are a country of laws, we have always maintained and we’ve worked very hard to ensure that nobody is above the law. Obviously, it’s a difficult situation, but it would have to be dealt with in the same manner as all other cases have been dealt with.”

Tonight hospital authorities tell News 5 that four-year-old Sophia Mueller, injured in Monday’s traffic accident, remains in a serious condition though she has shown signs of improvement.
