James Adderley and the gentleman’s game
Good evening, I’m James Adderley and you’re right on time for this fresh dish of Sports Monday. The Harrison Parks National Cricket Competition staged it All Star match Saturday at Bermudian Landing featuring the best from both zones of play.
For sure, cricket at its highest level in this country attracts fans from all over the country and today they are pumped up with excitement. The Zone One stars get to bat first with the squad’s Vice Captain, Lewellyn Sutherland, starting off the scoring with this swing for four.
However, things certainly looked bleak when Zone Two records the second out with less than twenty runs scored. But Zone One does get timely hitting to post up some numbers.
So Zone Two sends for Colin Young and he crushes this batting momentum. And then Lewellyn Sutherland who had already batted in fifty-two runs, which would turn out to be the game high, gets smoked by this blistering fastball.
Colin Young, who would finish with four wickets, displays his good stuff here as he strikes again. And here’s the final out for Zone One as Young ploughs down the wicket.
Zone One would finish with one hundred and thirty-three runs, at least so said the official scorekeeper.

“Of course today is all star, so you have a lot of players who are the best on their teams. But I think what happened is earlier on when I started to bowl I didn’t have a consecutive length, but when I came back on I was bowling the ball and breaking it hard enough I was able to get four wickets. So it’s very hot to we’re glad to be in the lunch.”

“We batted the first half, which we batted over forty-eight, and we scored a hundred and thirty-three runs.”
Q: And you think that is enough?”
Albern Rivero
“Well that is cool for the squad that we have, and we have a pretty good team, consist of about eight bowlers. We want to win and we are here to win, but also have fun and showcase our talents. It’s scheduled to over quick with the squad we have, we have some of the best bowlers from our division and we will take care of these guys very quickly.”
So here comes the Zone Two All Stars to bat, but immediately they run into the seasoned veteran Glickstein Bennett, who shows no mercy. Of course Zone Two does have its share of heavy hitters as demonstrated right here.
Nevertheless, the bowler Bennett gets another out when he forces this splice that is easily caught on the infield.
The Zone Two batter does make a run and begin to cut into the deficit. Edwin Segura would strike for thirty-five runs until he gets blasted with this nice pitch.
This is what the official scorer sheet look like–Glickstein Bennett would strike for whopping six wickets. But we do have some controversy–the official scorer said Zone One won one hundred and thirty-three to Zone Two’s a hundred and thirty. However, president Elston Wade said after checking the records both teams showed one hundred and thirty-one runs apiece. Hopefully we will have some closure to this particular event. And as soon as we get word from President Wade we’ll certainly pass it on. The fans nevertheless, had great fun and certainly were appreciative of this match.
In softball news, election of officers was held yesterday at Roger’s Stadium by the Belize Softball Federation. David Cruz emerged President, Patrick Henry Vice President, Phillipa Griffith-Bailey is Secretary General, Carol Parks-Young is Treasurer and Byron Donaire is Secretary/Assistant Treasurer.
In the meantime, Margaret Usher, a most famous Belizean pitcher who now resides in the U.S. has been nominated for the International Softball Hall of Fame, while gold medal coach Charles Humes has had his name re-submitted.
Meanwhile, the Belize City softball season opens this Sunday with the all-day marathon at Rogers Stadium. Enjoy Belize.
