Cycling, cricket, running top weekend sports

Story Picture
Good evening, I’m James Adderley and you’re inside Sports Monday. The National Senior Road Championship was staged by the Belize Cycle Association yesterday with some forty riders making a bid in this hundred and ten mile ride. It’s the only major event on the cycling calendar limited to nationals only as we go to the starting line at the toll bridge just outside sugar city Orange Walk.

With dreams of fame and glory, the pelathon kicks off the start leading towards Belize City. Eighteen miles from Belize City the pelathon remains more or less intact. However, at the station prize in front of the Save-U Supermarket, newly classified senior rider Miguel Jones out sprints Herman Requeña of Santino for the big W adding to his win at the Burrell Boom cut off.

Of course after sipping through Belize City, the main bunch re-assembles on the Western Highway. Around mile thirty-six this trio of Ariel Rosado, Roger Troyer of Cayo and Orson Butler manages to extricate themselves from the pack and make a run for it.

However, it would be a short-lived collaborative effort, because Ariel Rosado decides to go it alone at mile forty-one. That would become the defining moment of this race because the Santino rider would be reeled in.

And here he is blowing a kiss to his legion of fans taking this win in four hours, forty-four minutes, forty-one second, almost a minute ahead of his chasers.

In the sprint for second place, Big Mike Lewis shows he’s still got what it takes, forcing Mateo Cruz into third, Douglas Lamb finishes fourth, Barney Brown fifth, Calman Williams sixth, Nigel Matus seventh, Jeffrey Zelaya eighth, Shane Vasquez ninth, while Jose Choto rounds out the top ten. Incidentally folks, Santino’s cycling team has won all four major events staged so far in 2003.

Turning to the cycling scene, the second half of the Harrison Parks Cricket competition got underway over the weekend and we joint the game between Berlan and Brilliant of Crooked Tree.

It’s the visiting team Berlan battling first, and obviously they seemed to enjoy the bowling being issued from the Brilliant team. Of course, all good things must come to an end and here is that final out being recorded for Berlan, who totalled a hundred and thirty-four runs.

In their turn at bat, Brilliant could only must sixty-three runs, thanks to superior bowling from the Berlan team, who picked up the win rather easily.

Finally folks, the annual University of Belize marathon was staged yesterday, with the girls starting at Belmopan and the boys at San Ignacio–both simultaneously.

With a twenty-mile lead, the girls looking to have the advantage and are indeed dressed for the occasion.

However, around mile eighteen the male runners were right up against the females. In fact, this is the actual moment the males overtake their female counterparts. And as they say in the business, would never look back.

And of course this is the runner that takes it to the tape on Freetown Road as the U.B. boys win again. Of course on the fashion side, the girls prevailed easily, even while breaking a sweat.

That’s it for now, we invite you back same time, same place, next week. Jah over all! I’m James Adderley.
