San Ignacio man drowns in Macal River
In another case of death involving water, an afternoon socializing with friends on the banks of the Macal River proved deadly for one Cayo man. Police say forty-eight year old David Waight was drinking with friends at a local bar Monday afternoon when he and a friend, forty-nine year old Donald Harris, went to the river near the Hawkesworth Bridge for a swim. Harris says Waight went into the water, but he chose to continue drinking on the riverside. Four hours later, Harris noticed his buddy hadn’t come back and ran up the bank to the police station. The body of Donald Harris was pulled from the Macal River just before midnight and transported to the San Ignacio town hospital. At this time, police do not suspect foul play.
