As seven-year-old Malli Herrera recovers at the K.H.M.H., Cardinal Andrews continues to fight for his life and remains on a ventilator inside the I.C.U. The twenty-eight-year-old Belize Water Services employee was targeted on Wednesday afternoon around four o’clock, as he walked on Partridge Street in the Saint Martin de Porres area in Belize City. No one has been detained with the attempt on the life of the Burrell Boom father of one. Tonight, the family is currently asking for your prayers. It came as a shock to the family on Wednesday afternoon when word spread like wildfire that twenty-eight-year-old Cardinal Andrews had been shot and rushed via police mobile to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital. The Burrell Boom resident was walking on Partridge Street and after passing the intersection with Banak Street, a lone gunman, reportedly riding a bicycle, fired a single shot at Andrews from behind. The bullet caught Andrews on the back of the head and exited his forehead. Tonight he is fighting for his life at the Intensive Care Unit of the hospital and the family fears the worst.
According to the family, who denied interviews earlier today due to the sensitivity of the case, Andrews is known to be a cool and easy going person; he was the valedictorian at Wesley College and has a five-year-old daughter. He was a part of the Youth Apprenticeship Program coordinated by Dianne Finnegan and News Five has confirmed that he was recently employed on contract by Belize Water Services Limited.
It is not known what was the motive behind the attempt on his life shortly after four p.m. on Wednesday and when we last spoke with the family, police were yet to inform them of what transpired. After carrying out the act of gun violence, the gunman sped off and escaped. Andrews lay gravely injured on the sidewalk on Partridge Street as passersby rendered assistance. The police arrived shortly after to process the scene before a concerted effort to put him in the pan of the police pickup truck and whisk him away. Duane Moody for News Five.
