Children rally in Belize City
We don’t know what the children of Guatemala are doing while their teachers are on strike, but here in Belize it was the students on the march. Jacqueline Woods has more.

Hey, the heat may have been unbearable for us older folks, but one thousand, five hundred primary school children paraded and danced under the hot sun from the Belize City Centre to the Memorial Park. Today was observed as Children’s Day and the march brought to an end a series of activities held to commemorate their special week.

“How important is children’s day?”

“It is important because the teacher and the principal take time out to show how much they love us and appreciate us.”

“So you’re looking forward to taking part in this morning’s parade?”

“Yes ma’am.”

“You’re not worried about the heat?”

“No ma’am.”

“Really important because we won’t be at school the run bout and sweaty up we self, we will just the have fun right where we go bout and so.”

“So, how do you feel that you’ll be taking part in this morning’s parade?”

“Well it feels good because it’s like an exercise.”

“So how long have you been practicing for this morning?”

“Only about a day or two.”
It may have been only a couple of days but the school bands and all the students certainly sounded and looked good as they played all the way to the park.

“What we are trying to do is promoting children. Usually, when we have a parade we’re promoting cancer or something bad, we’re working towards a cause, but this time we’re trying to promote children; this day is all about them.”

“This mornings parade is really a celebration of children and childhood, and also it’s an opportunity for us to raise awareness about the rights and responsibilities of children. So that’s what we’re hoping to accomplish. It’s just simply children’s week; children are here, they’re very important in our society, and also that they have rights and responsibilities is the message that we’re trying to get out today.”

In another children’s day activity, B.T.L.’s annual Stay in School Jam was held in Corozal Town.
