Details of election results
Elections are about numbers and we would be remiss not to document the final results of election 2003. So here are the details.
We’ll begin in the Belize District: In the Freetown Division the P.U.P.’s Francis Fonseca won with 1,154 votes, beating U.D.P. candidate Doug Singh who received 771 votes.
In Caribbean Shores incumbent P.U.P. Jose Coye won with 1,592 votes, while U.D.P. aspirant Oscar Ayuso garnered 1,429.
The People’s United Party retained its stronghold in Pickstock with Godfrey Smith receiving 899 votes, beating the U.D.P.’s Diane Haylock, who obtained 252. However, former U.D.P. standard bearer, Wilfred “Sedi” Elrington, running as independent received more votes than Haylock, coming in with 439; the largest number received by any independent candidate.
Prime Minister Said Musa won easily in Fort George, receiving 1,173. The U.D.P.’s Carlos Walker received 320, while independent Francis Gegg got 38.
In Collet The U.D.P.’s Patrick Faber won with 948 over incumbent P.U.P. Remijio Montejo, who received 889. Independent Dr. Paul Jones obtained 55.
In Lake Independence the P.U.P.’s Cordel Hyde will once again bear the title area rep, after 2,764 votes was cast in his favour. Hyde defeated U.D.P. candidate Tony Leslie, who acquired 1,499 votes, and also won over independents Hubert Elrington who received 88, and Patrick Rogers 96.
The U.D.P.’s Michael Finnegan will spend five more years in Mesopotamia, after receiving 1,024 votes. P.U.P. candidate Philip Bracket obtained 498 votes.
In Albert P.U.P. standard bearer Mark Espat creamed his two opponents receiving 1,482 votes, while the U.D.P.’s Marilyn Williams acquired 253 and independent Sydney Fuller 54.
In Port Loyola Anthony “Boots” Martinez delivered his seat for the U.D.P., receiving a total of 2,386 votes and beating P.U.P. incumbent standard-bearer Dolores Balderamos Garcia who obtained 1,565, and independent Percival Reynolds who accumulated 45 votes.
And in the hotly contested Queen’s Square, U.D.P. Leader Dean Barrow will add five more years to his eighteen already spent in the division. Barrow received 1,203 votes, easily beating his P.U.P. opponent Dickie Bradley, who received 953.
The P.U.P.’s Ralph Fonseca retained his Belize Rural Central seat, with 2,110 votes to beat U.D.P. newcomer Colin Gillett, whose tally at the end of the day totalled 1,063.
The P.U.P. also stayed in Belize Rural North with Max Samuels receiving 1,447 votes, while U.D.P. candidate Felix Sutherland captured 1,251.
In Belize Rural South U.D.P. candidate Manuel Heredia took home the victory boasting 1,539 votes to beat P.U.P. standard-bearer Patty Arceo, who received 1,430.
Turning to the Corozal District, the P.U.P. will remain in Corozal Bay with Vildo Marin receiving 2,089 votes. His U.D.P. opponent Carlos Castillo got 1,827, while independent Roy Rodriguez walked away with 86.
In Corozal North the P.U.P.’s Valdemar Castillo had a close call, receiving 1,713 votes to narrowly beat his U.D.P. candidate Nemencio Acosta, who acquired 1,705. Felipe Tzul running as an independent got 56 votes.
Florencio Marin added one more to the P.U.P.’s successes by bringing home Corozal South East with 2,155 votes. U.D.P. standard-bearer Servando Samos received 1,930, while independent Hipolito Bautista gathered 52 votes.
The U.D.P.’s only victory in the north came from Gabriel Martinez who accumulated 1,875 votes. He won over the P.U.P. Gregorio Garcia’s 1,593 votes and independent Lucilio Tek’s 20 votes.
In the Orange Walk district, the P.U.P. took home all four seats. Incumbent Johnny BriceƱo retained his Orange Walk Central seat, receiving 1,713 votes and beating U.D.P. candidate Miguel Urbina who garnered 1,050.
Orange Walk North’s Servulo Baeza walked away with 2,256 votes, winning over Philip de la Fuente, who accumulated 2,040 for the U.D.P.
Dave Burgos stays in Orange Walk East with 2,400 votes, while the U.D.P.’s Elodio Aragon got 2,144.
The P.U.P.’s Orange Walk South candidate Ismael Cal received 2,655 votes, beating the U.D.P.’s Julian Padron who got 1,971 votes, and independent Erwin Sanchez with 37.
Moving to the Cayo District, the P.U.P.’s Mario Castellanos took home his seat by accumulating 2,438 votes. The U.D.P.’s Rene Montero went home with 2,260, while independents Ivan Roberts and Dito Juan both received 26.
P.U.P. candidate Ainslie Leslie cleaned up in Cayo North acquiring 2,917 votes to beat the U.D.P.’s Dean Williams, 2,706.
Cayo South P.U.P. candidate Agripino Cawich will stay put after receiving 3,111 votes. The U.D.P.’s John Saldivar had to settle for 3,087.
However, the U.D.P.’s Erwin Contreras was once again victorious in Cayo West, acquiring 2,180 to beat P.U.P. standard-bearer Kendall Mendez, whose votes totalled 1,800.
Sylvia Flores is Dangriga’s new area rep after receiving 1,527 votes. She won over the U.D.P.’s Russell “Chiste” Garcia’s 1,299 votes and independent Ian Caliz’s 44 votes.
In Stann Creek West the P.U.P.’s Rodwell Ferguson delivered his seat with 2,486 votes. U.D.P. candidate Glenford Eiley received 1,895 votes, while independent Michael Flores took 30.
And in the Toledo District, Mike Espat will remain in Toledo East accumulating 1,757 votes to beat the U.D.P.’s Eden Martinez who received 1,568.
Toledo West also remained in the blue as Marcial Mes won with 2,368 votes over U.D.P. standard bearer Dennis Usher’s 1,940 votes. Independent Leonardo Acal garnered 19 votes.
And in case you may have forgotten… Wednesday was also the date of balloting for municipal elections. So as not to subject viewers to information overload, we’ll keep it brief. The P.U.P. won all seats in Belize City, Belmopan, Orange Walk, Corozal, Dangriga and Punta Gorda. The U.D.P. swept San Ignacio and Benque Viejo, while San Pedro elected a mayor and five U.D.P. councillors along with a single P.U.P. councillor.
