Fuller files suit to bar Williams from running

Story Picture
The P.U.P. said it wasn’t going to bother and the U.D.P. dared them to try. Well today both parties could only watch as independent Albert Division candidate Sydney Fuller quietly filed a motion in the Supreme Court to have his U.D.P. opponent, Marilyn Williams be declared ineligible to run for a seat in the House of Representatives.

Sydney Fuller, Independent Candidate, Albert Division

“It’s not a personal attack. It’s just that Miss Williams has violated the Constitution of Belize and I maintain that. And I represent people and I will fight for my people. We cannot have a person breach the Constitution and then say, oh it’s all well and done. No, No, No. We must respect the constitution of the land, and that’s all I am doing.”

“The motion I filed today is because Mrs. Williams holds a U.S. passport and in the Constitution, it clearly states that you shouldn’t have a dual citizenship and run for elected office. I think that’s a breach of the Constitution of Belize, and I need to do it on behalf of the people of the Albert Division.”

Jacqueline Woods

“But why have you decided to file this motion at this time, its not like the case will be heard before Wednesday?”

Sydney Fuller

“Yes, the information, I did not receive the information until late last week and it took sometime for me to really go and get the facts together to file the motion. If I had gotten the information before, certainly I would have done it long, long ago, but this is the quickest I can do it.”

Actually, the constitution does not prohibit a dual national from running, only those who have taken an oath of allegiance to a foreign power. In her case, Marilyn Williams admitted to taking such an oath when she became a naturalised citizen of the United States. The case is not expected to be heard before Wednesday and would thus proceed only in the event that Williams won the election. The P.U.P. candidate in the Albert Division is Mark Espat.
