Fundraiser nets almost $45,000 for Scouts

Story Picture
Saturday marked the official close of Scout Week, and on that night a fundraiser was held to enlarge the Scout endowment fund. The interest earned from that fund is used to finance specific projects of the association. Over forty-five thousand dollars was raised through generous donations from members of the business community and it is expected that more money will be collected over the course of the week. Guest of honour at the dinner was Prime Minister Said Musa. The P.M. explained that his membership in the Scouting movement as a boy in San Ignacio and Belize City had its benefits years later when he studied law in England.

Prime Minister Said Musa

“I was studying in Manchester, but I had to go to London on various occasions to attend what they call eating dinners at the Inns of Court. This is part of the training to become a barrister in England. So when I would go to London, and London has always been a very expensive city, I found out that there was a place called the Baden Powell House where they offer bed and breakfast; and it was the cheapest bed and breakfast in London. So every time I went to London I presented myself as a Scout from Belize, not a budding lawyer, a Scout from Belize and I got cheap bed and breakfast right in London. So I’m very proud to be a member of the Scout movement.

Chairman of the Scout Endowment Foundation is Johnny Searle and you can still pledge your financial support by calling him at Belize Global Travel Services. Patron of the Scout Association is Governor general Sir Colville Young.
