River cleanup nets plenty garbage
With the annual La Ruta Maya canoe race ready to rocket down the Macal and Belize Rivers next month, one group made sure that the paddlers would not be floating through garbage. Over the weekend the Belize Community Service Alliance sponsored a clean up of portions of the Macal River that had become hot spots for dumping. When the river sweep was over, the volunteers had managed to collect a total of eight vehicles, seven refrigerators, twenty-two automotive batteries, twenty-three tires and a whopping three hundred and fifty-seven crocus sacks full of trash. The cleanup received the support of many donors and the organisers are particularly thankful for the continued financial support of PACT, the Protected Areas Conservation Trust.
