Policeman charged in city crash
This morning traffic came to a temporary halt at the corner of Dolphin and Raccoon streets after a pickup truck crashed into a Trooper at the junction. According to witnesses, both vehicles were on Raccoon Street approaching the intersection when the pickup, which is the property of the Police Department, tried to overtake the Trooper, but instead crashed into it. Inside the trooper at the time of the accident were the driver Raphael Novelo, his wife and five month old baby. Both the mother and child received minor injuries and were treated at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital. This afternoon the police informed News 5 that the truck, which was driven by police constable Ruben Awayo, was assigned to the Anti Drug Unit. Authorities say they have already charged the P.C. with driving without due care and attention and failure to conform to a traffic sign.
