3 wounded in unrelated shootings
A series of unrelated attacks on Sunday has left three men recovering from gunshot wounds. According to police, around 1:00 a.m., twenty-three year old Norris Leslie and thirty-nine year old Mark McKoy were socializing in a yard on Casuarina Street in Belize City, when a car drove up and someone inside started shooting. When it was over, Leslie had been hit in his abdomen and McKoy in the butt. Quick police work resulted in the recovery of the vehicle used in the incident on Lavender Street. Inside the car, cops found eight spent nine millimetre shells. One suspect is in custody, but at news time tonight no charges had been filed. As to a possible motive for the incident, police say it was the result of a quarrel over a young woman.
Later that same day, the outcome of a football game appears to the cause of a shooting in St. Matthews Village. Apparently, residents of the villages of St. Matthews and Burrell Boom had participated in a football marathon, but when it over, twenty-two year old Roy Lee Young wasn’t too happy about something. He started stoning the bus of the visiting team, which broke a window and hit a passenger inside. At that point, the driver of the bus, thirty-five year old Paul Waight, tried to get control of the situation but Young wouldn’t give up. Determined to protect his vehicle and his passengers, Waight pulled out his licensed nine millimetre and brought Young down with one shot. Waight has been detained but no charges have been filed against him.
By Sunday night things had still not cooled off in the city as just after 8:00, thirty-one year old Evan “Duck” Garnett took a pair of bullets near his home on Jasmine Street. According to police, acting on a tip that someone was attempting to break into his house, Garnett went to investigate and found someone he recognized in the vicinity. Words were exchanged and the man got on a bicycle and made like he was riding away. But Garnett says seconds later, the cyclist pulled out a handgun and squeezed the trigger non-stop. Garnett was hit in the arm and thigh. He was rushed to the K.H.M.H. and is said to be in a stable condition. Twenty-seven year old Stuart Sutherland has been charged with attempted murder, use of deadly means of harm and grievous harm.
