Third parties weigh in, with strong condemnation
The Belize Progressive Party is calling on Belizeans to persuade their area representatives to vote in favour of satisfying the U.H.S. debt and on civil society to make a demand that Government pay the debt when the Belize Bank calls for it. In a press statement it says that the Government’s defiance of the C.C.J. ruling demonstrates both contempt for the supremacy of the judiciary and feeding a monster created by the established system. The third party says the matter has nothing to do with politics, and accuses the Prime Minister of attempting to cloud the decision by suggesting that the vote in parliament would settle the matter when in fact the Constitution is supreme and judicial remedies exist. In a separate release, Vision Inspired by the People warns, “Despite the current sluggish state of the Belizean economy, the crushing poverty and the real hardship faced by Belizeans in their daily lives, the V.I.P. warns that any failure by Government to pay its debt will only multiply the cruel financial burden on Belize.” It too calls on Government to rescind its intransigence and pay the debt to avoid unnecessary shock to the economy.
