Drunk driver charged in highway death
A string of charges have been filed against a driver following Saturday’s road tragedy, which claimed the life of an eleven-year-old girl. Twenty-six year old Filiberto Gutierrez of San Victor Village, Corozal, faces writs of manslaughter by negligence, driving without due care and attention, causing death by careless conduct, and driving with alcohol content above the prescribed limit. Police say an inebriated Gutierrez was the man driving the truck that hit eleven-year-old Eva Quinonez around eight Saturday night on the Northern Highway in her home village of Buena Vista in the Corozal District. Gutierrez allegedly veered sharply off a dirt road onto the highway in the path of an oncoming bus. The two vehicles collided, and the truck then ran into two other vehicles travelling in the opposite direction. It then ran off the road, knocking down Quinonez. Gutierrez appeared before Magistrate Kathleen Lewis on Monday and was granted and met bail of four thousand dollars plus one surety of the same amount. He is to reappear on April twenty-eighth.
