Barroom brawl leads to murder
A night of drinking at a Corozal club, coupled with anger over an old dispute proved to be the recipe for murder over the weekend. Police reports are that sometime around ten on Friday night, twenty-three year old Elvis Vasquez and his older brother, Victor, were socializing at El Chital Nightclub on Second Street. But their evening of fun was sidetracked when they engaged in a scuffle with twenty-four year old Jesus Olivarez, and his brothers, Elijio and Margarito over an old “beef.” The Olivarez brothers then left for their home on Eleventh Avenue, while the Vasquez’s also left for their abode on Fifth Avenue. But somehow the fistfight at the club turned to a machete war zone on Eleventh Street where the Olivarez’ live. When it was over, Elvis Vasquez lay dying from chop wounds to his head. His brother, Victor also suffered machete wounds and is reported to be in stable condition in the Northern Regional Hospital. Elijio Olivarez was hacked severely and was transferred to the K.H.M.H. where he remains in serious but stable condition. Meanwhile, Margarito, who could not be located after the incident, presented himself to police on Sunday night. He and his brothers have been charged jointly with one count of murder and one count of attempted murder. Other charges are expected to be filed shortly against the surviving Vasquez brothers.
