Benqueño dies in Western Highway accident
A traffic accident on the Western Highway has left an elderly customs guard dead. Reports are that around six thirty on Saturday night, seventy-one year old Antonio Chan, a resident of Benque Viejo, was travelling to Belize City when the pick up truck in which he was riding, crashed into the back of dump truck parked on the road. Chan and the driver of the pickup, thirty-seven year old Jorge Gonzalez sustained serious head and body injuries and were later transported to the K.H.M.H. for treatment, but Chan was pronounced dead on arrival. The dump truck, which had broken down earlier in the evening, was left on the road by sixty-six year old Randolph Armstrong of Hattieville. Police sources tell News 5 that since January first, this is the fifth fatal traffic accident to take place between miles eight and twenty-eight on the Western Highway, accounting for ten deaths.
