Has Vildo Westby Been Captured? Police Await Confirmation
On Friday, we reported that an arrest had been made by Mexican authorities in connection with the brutal slaying of San Pedro resident Felix Ayuso back in February. While Vildo Westby has been on the lam from the Belize Police Department since that incident over six months ago, details of his detention in Los Choapas, Veracruz, Mexico are yet to be confirmed. That’s because local authorities say that despite an all-points bulletin being issued for Westby’s arrest, they are still awaiting word from Interpol to verify the facts of the report.
ASP Alejandro Cowo, O.C., C.I.B., Eastern Division
“I know that he is a suspect for that murder there. We have been communicating with Interpol Mexico. We know that we have shared a wanted poster with him and a warrant for his arrest, however, we have not established or confirmed yet from them that if indeed he has been arrested there. We have heard rumors that he was detained somewhere in Mexico, but we are waiting for confirmation from Interpol Mexico to verify that information with us.”

“So no confirmation as yet?”
ASP Alejandro Cowo
“No confirmation as yet. It’s just a rumor that we have been hearing.”
Ayuso’s family in San Pedro notified Ambergris Today that had received an anonymous tip informing that Westby was reportedly living and working in Los Choapas. The family journeyed to that location where they purportedly found the suspect working as a baker under the assumed name Alejandro Lorenzo Cruz. With assistance from Mexican police, they were said to have apprehended Westby on Thursday. Again, the Belize Police Department is awaiting confirmation on this report.
