Witness turns murder case on its head; Keyron Johnson free after six years

In the courts, Keyron Johnson was freed of the murder of eighteen-year-old Christopher Jorgensen that happened back in April 2012.  Johnson was the main suspect and was first charged with attempted murder, dangerous harm and deadly means of harm – but that charge was upgraded to murder when Jorgensen died. Jorgensen was shot while he played basketball on the Jane Usher Boulevard basketball court just across from his home. He died a few days later at the hospital. Two men reportedly rode up on a bike and one of them, alleged to be Johnson, fired several shots, which hit Jorgensen in the mid-section

Johnson got his day in court and today, almost six years later he was freed. We spoke with his attorney Bryan Neal who explains that his client was mistakenly identified as the killer. Friends and family gathered outside the courtroom to greet the free man.

“The police did no investigation and once the main witness, the sister of the deceased was put on the stand, it became apparent that she did not see what she told the police that she saw. Once that became apparent and then the judge could not find he accused guilty.”

“You also brought a scenes of crime technician as a witness to speak to the condition of the lighting of the basketball court on the night in question?”

“Yes. The prosecution did not intend to call the witness but when I peruse the documents, I realized that the witness had gone to the scene; so I applied for her to subpoenaed and she came to court and said basically what I wanted her to say that it was pitch black so the witness could not be believed.”
