Police’s 2018 Resolutions: Armed, Empowered, Active

And finally from ComPol Whylie, is a projection of what can be expected of the department come January 2018.  While many of its challenges are ever-present, the agency is armed with several crime fighting resources to tackle those obstacles head-on.  The boots-on-the-ground approach to policing is also being bolstered an internal review of existing laws, firearm and police acts.

“Looking ahead at 2018, I am very optimistic that the Belize Police Department will have a very successful year in its delivery of service to the citizens of Belize.  Not only is Operation ACT going to continue in Belize City in 2018, but the investments made in 2017, in terms of the training of our police officers coupled with the greater use of technology such as the bullet catchers, the AFIS system, the IBIS system, coupled with the improvements being made at the National Forensics Science Service should yield tremendous dividends in our crime fighting strategy.  Additionally, the department should see itself empowered in the fight against criminals as we anticipate that in early 2018, the anti-gang legislation as well as the witness and amenity act will become law.  Recommendations have also been submitted for the strengthening of the firearm act, as well as the police act.  The department’s legal advisor, Sr. Supt. Jones will continue to review current legislation with a view for further recommendations to be made to enhance our ability to fight crimes and criminals.”

As previously stated by Commissioner of Police Allen Whylie, Operation ACT remains in effect going into 2018, however, the ant-crime strategy will come to an end sometime later in the year.
