The Deadly George Price Highway Claims More Lives: Two in Cotton Tree

It has been another deadly holiday weekend countrywide. As many as seven persons lost their lives by misadventure; whether, murder or in road traffic accidents. We start with the most deadly of the mishaps, along the George Price Highway. Thirty-three-year-old Linda Carolina Hernandez and twenty-four-year-old Oscar Rene Alvarado of Cotton Tree were leaving the village late on Christmas Eve when their Skygo motorcycle was apparently hit from behind by a Volkswagen-type vehicle which fled the scene. Alvarado died immediately at the scene while Hernandez survived just long enough to die in treatment at the Western Regional Hospital. A family member told us they never saw this coming after a night of socializing.

“[On] the twenty-fourth, he was here with us: me, my boyfriend, Linda and my brother; all of us was out here hanging [out]. And we went home by ten-thirty and they still stayed here. My mom says that they left minutes after eleven-thirty and they did not know what was happening. My family got to know that my brother was missing on the twenty-fifht, early in the morning, when my uncle called her and told her that they needed her at the hospital. But she didn’t know what it was; she didn’t know that my brother passed away – my uncle just told her that she needs to be at the hospital and to hurry. So she went and woke me up early in the morning and told me to come home and take care of the kids, because she was heading to the hospital. When she reached there, the doctor took her to the emergency room and told her that she needs to be strong; as she heard that, she knew that my brother had passed away.”

“What are the police telling the family in regards to what they think happened?”

“They’re not telling us [anything]; they didn’t stop and say this is what we know; they are not telling us nothing. All we know is that they say it was an accident, and that is all we know.”
