Police Reassess Operational Strategies Following Deadly Weekend

Joseph Myvett

On the heels of an exceptionally bloody Christmas weekend, considering the number of fatal traffic accidents recorded, the Belize Police Department has reassessed its various crime fighting and operational strategies to mitigate these incidents heading into the New Year’s weekend.  Assistant Commissioner of Police Joseph Myvett reviewed the events of the four-day weekend and also gave reassurance that officers remain on duty along the various roadways to ensure traffic safety.

ACP Joseph Myvett, Head, National Crimes Investigation Branch

“Major crime-wise, it was minimal with the exception of the number of traffic accidents.  There were the two death investigations and I believe three different cases of suspected suicides aside from those.  That is pretty much how the weekend went.”

“And going into the New Year’s weekend, we know that again, we’ll be seeing a lot of drinking and a lot of partying, perhaps even more partying than Christmas.  Do these, we have at least four traffic fatalities and one more this morning…  Is there any public advisory that police could give and will there be stricter enforcement on the highway since that seems to be a problem?”

ACP Joseph Myvett

“Definitely.  The police are out there in numbers and they will definitely be increasing on their strategies throughout the next few days and we want to advise drivers, don’t drink and drive.  And the speeding on the highway, definitely police will also be on the highways in order to try and minimize these accidents.”
