4 Mexicans arrested for illegal fishing
Illegal fishing is back in the news tonight as police on Monday evening intercepted a twenty-five foot skiff with four Mexicans aboard who are suspected of illegally catching conch in Belizean waters. The boat was intercepted near Bacalar Chico at the northern end of Ambergris Caye and contained ten sacks of cleaned conch weighing around a thousand pounds. No fishing license was aboard and the four fishermen have been detained. The case is not as clear-cut as it might appear, however, in that Bacalar Chico is the northern border of Belize and the fishermen may have been slightly off course returning from the Chinchorro Banks on their way to Chetumal. The conch, by the way, were all of legal size.
