Bz. City woman wins half of record Lotto jackpot
Lilia Mai of New Road, Belize City, collected a hefty amount of cash today. Not the entire one hundred and fifty thousand shown on the big cheque, but even half that amount is no small change. Mai was one of two lucky people who matched the five numbers to those drawn in the big lotto jackpot of January second. Mai said she randomly selected the numbers and found out about her good fortune on News 5 the next night. After the two-way split and deduction of taxes, she collected sixty-two thousand, seven hundred and fifty dollars. She said she and her husband, Claudio, will use the much-needed cash to defray medical expenses for her youngest child, seven-year old Elizabeth, who was diagnosed with a brain problem as a toddler.
Lilia Mai, Lotto Winner
“Since six months she was in the hospital and they say they can’t do nothing for her. She like got too much seizures, so she need her medication and like that, and the medication expensive.”
The other winner has not yet come forward, but has ninety days from the date of the draw to do so. If he or she–along with the ticket–is not found, then the Board of Directors at Tropical Gaming will decide what to do with the unclaimed cash.
