MLA/TAA Calls on All to Do Their Part
In light of the tragic incident, alcaldes are being reminded to make certain that the highest level of attention is paid to complaints where women and children are being violated. There is also an appeal for anyone with information that can lead to an arrest, or the solving of this monstrous crime, to please come forward.
On the phone: Pablo Mis, Program Coordinator, MLA
“These crimes are not the start or this doesn’t just happen, these kinds of act, it’s been very well known, often manifest itself in minor behavior, minor attitudes that if it is targeting women, that it is put against women. So the alcaldes, I want to impress upon them that they do have a role in ensuring that when complaints are brought forward, particularly the complaints that speak to the violation and abuse of women and children that those complaints be given the maximum attention and that they must be followed through by the alcaldes, whether that means being able to ascertain those instances, those complaints at the community level or referring them to the appropriate authorities that can properly address complaints against children and women. It is the expectation of the Toledo Alcalde Association that the police will do their job to the best of their ability to ensure that all the evidence, all the information that is needed is properly safeguarded, put together so that the perpetrator or perpetrators can be properly tried before the rule of law. We also are aware that the authorities cannot on their own resolve these kinds of incidents, so we want to appeal to members of our community that if there is information that they have, that they pass on those information to the authorities. If they are not sure of how to provide those information, that they can approach their respective alcaldes or even the office of the alcalde association. We will guide them and advise them on how best to pass along the information, providing those information, having the communities be a part of resolving these issues is fundamental if we’re going to see these kinds of acts being brought to a stop.”
