In news from the education front, this afternoon, two students from Belize City were awarded for their academic excellence in the A-Level exams. Kimberly Haughton and Kalilah Enriquez ranked among the top five in the world in the Cambridge International A-Level English Literature exams for 2002. The brief ceremony at the S.J.C. library proved to be a source of pride for both the recipients and their parents.

Hubert Enriquez, Kalilah’s Father

“I think what she has done is gonna be a good example for other young people to follow as well. So I feel particularly proud of her accomplishments and I am certain that she’s gonna do well.”

Kimberly Haughton, Award Recipient

“We put a lot of effort into it, we work really hard for two years and it paid off, so it’s a really gratifying feeling.”

Marion Ali

“How does this accomplishment take you to your next step, and what is your next step?”

Kimberly Haughton

“Well right now I’m just gonna focus on finishing college, getting my Bachelor’s right now. I have another year and a half and I just want to try to do really well at that. In literature, we learned to write, to analyse to think a lot, and it’s helping me a lot now.”

Kalilah Enriquez was unable to attend the ceremony as she is studying at Fordham University in New York. Haughton is attending Holy Cross College in Massachusetts. Meanwhile, the students’ lecturer, Yvette Holland was also awarded a certificate of appreciation.
