Perera makes another try at politics

Meanwhile, one politician who went silent over recent years is suddenly back in election mode. Estevan Perera, remembered best for his intimate involvement in the now defunct People’s Democratic Party, says he has been saving up to finance his new campaign. Perera, who is now running an independent race for mayor, says he has a gripe with tax rates and drainage.

“What is happening right now, they’re not collecting most of their taxes because people can’t pay. And they’re asking too much, that’s the reason. So you might as well drop it and let them pay an equal share and everybody will come up.”

“I am going to put it to the people. I am here, you want to change, you want have a better living, give me a chance, let me do it for you.”

Perera says he was encouraged to re-enter politics by supporters of his last political contest.
