Guatemalan charged in El Pilar attacks
Police in San Ignacio believe they have cracked one of the year’s major unsolved crimes in the Cayo District. Today twenty-five year old Guatemalan Alex Santos was arrested and charged with rape and robbery in connection with the September first attack on a number of tourists on the road to El Pilar. Santos, a resident of Clarissa Falls, was allegedly identified by at least one of his victims. In that assault, vehicles driving on the road to and from the Maya site were methodically held up by armed masked men and routed into a side road where their occupants were robbed, isolated and several women raped.
