Three creative writers perform at Image Factory

Story Picture
Friday will be a night to remember at the Image Factory as three of Belize’s most creative voices will be performing excerpts from their latest works. This afternoon, News 5’s Jacqueline Woods caught up with the senior member of the trio.

John Alexander Watler, Reciting poem

“In a tiny manger lay a porcelain child, upon its face a beatific smile. Three wise men were kneeling on the ground, shepherds were gathering from all around. And fresh bread and sweet wine was everywhere abound and the air was filled with Christmas joyous sounds. And in the sky a brilliant sky did shine and the hobo cried out, this whole wide world is mine.”

Hobo’s Christmas is just one of the many entertaining poems you can find in a volume entitled “De Works”. The book is a compilation of poetry, plays, short stories and lyrics written over a period of time by John Alexander Watler.

“It’s something that I always wanted to do because you know there were things that were languishing in my brains. And normally you know if you have an idea and you don’t put it out, it’s only your idea. So when I was out there on the stage doing monologues, because every piece in this book I have performed on the stage, every one of them. So I know that they are appreciated, and I know the extent to which they are appreciated.”

…And on Friday December thirteenth, you will not only get the chance to appreciate the works of John Alexander Watler, but other talents such as Amado Chan and Grandmaster Lee. The authors’ publisher, Yasser Musa, has put together a production that highlights all three men’s unique literary work.

“Well you should expect me livening up the crowd. I am going to do a whole lot of stuff. A whole lot of good stuff and you have Grandmaster there, you know, and he will do his video and some previews and Mr. Amado Chan, an excellent poet. I think that you know one of the things our publisher does, is if something impresses him or his people who read it and says hey this is good, then he makes an effort to bring it to the public and I think this is something that we needed long ago.”

The show gets underway at 7:00 p.m. at the Image Factory on North Front Street. Jacqueline Woods for News 5.

Copies of De Works will be on sale at the show for twenty-five dollars. Meanwhile, Watler, Chan and Grandmaster Lee will be making another appearance in Orange Walk at the Banquitas House of Culture on December eighteenth.
