Jermaine Grant Charged in Caye Caulker Brawl
Turning to the courts…Caye Caulker resident Jermaine Grant is accused of attempted murder, use of deadly means of harm and dangerous harm against Jamal Bennett following a stabbing incident on the island on Monday. After receiving medical treatment for an unrelated stomach ailment, he appeared in court to be read his charges, for which no plea was taken. Police had responded to reports of a fight in the Palapa Area and found the men in a boat on the west side of the island. Bennett was treated at the Caye Caulker Polyclinic and Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital for stab wounds to the abdomen and shoulder. Thirty-one year old Grant told Magistrate Michelle Trapp that the stabbing was not intentional and that others were involved, and also claimed a firearm was involved as well. According to Grant he was approached by the victim who had his right hand at his pants waist as if reaching for a gun and he reacted out of self-defense. The Magistrate intervened and said he should leave his explanation for his defense at trial. Grant is remanded and returns to court on May fifteenth.
