Stepfather accused of molestation of child charged with dangerous harm amid protests
Just before news time a small protest was held in front of the Queen Street Police Station by persons to condemn the rape of an infant. Police have just now charged for dangerous harm, the stepfather of the child, a twenty- one year old resident from Maskall who was left to care for the child for hours on Wednesday. While his photograph and identify have been circulating on social media since the story broke, to protect the child we will not broadcast those particulars. The step-grandmother of the child is the primary caretaker but on Wednesday, she came to the City to run errands and left him with the child at their home. When she returned to the village after four o’clock, he went to meet her at the bus stop and told her that the child was not responsive. Thereafter the girl was rushed to the polyclinic in the village and then brought to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital where she remains clinging to life pending a most difficult decision to take by her mother and biological father. The child has injuries all over her body and there are signs she had been sexually penetrated. While the stepfather has been charged and will remain in custody this weekend, his appearance in court is expected early next week.

“I am here just simply because I am mother of two and I wouldn’t like anybody to do this to my child. I come out here and bring my little girl so that she can support what is going on. I feel like what is going on in our country is too much and justice needs to play its part in this country. I simply believe that the Government needs to open its eyes and something needs to be done so that they could learn a lesson. I come out here to support and I hope that it could create some change because I cannot go to bed to sleep on it tonight. I cannot because I feel like I need to do something.”

“I listen to the domestic violence and the murders and stuff, but when it comes to a one-year-old child who can’t even read ih name or even say ih name then that is a different thing. We have to talk and see if we can get justice here for this baby. My thing is that I would hold everybody accountable for what is going on; stepfather, step-grandmother, mother, everybody because somebody wah eventually squeal on somebody. We have to bring down some kind of pressure to see what is going on. It is sad to know that this is the sad reality of what life is all about today. 2018 and this is the new millennium weh we deh inna.”

“I strongly believe that it has been rampant and we have seen a 12-year-old murdered. We have seen an increase of domestic violence against women and now we are seeing a 17-month-old baby. It is high time that we increase stiffer penalties as it relates to sex offenders and men who beat women. I believe also that we need to do a directory for these sex offenders and men who beat women who have been found guilty. The public needs to know exactly who these individuals are and publicize them.”
