Cemetery cleaned by Gwen Lizarraga students
While the Belize City Council takes back control of the dumpsite today, last Friday some Gwen Lizarraga High School students decided to take control and clean up another area along the Western Highway—the Lord Ridge Cemetery. According to their teacher, Holland Marin, removing trash from the burial ground is a part of their community service program.

“Each year the students, in order for them to be eligible to graduate, they must complete a certain amount of service hours. However, what they have done this year is to start it at the first form level and each class is expected to complete fifteen service hours. Our class was granted a half day because we came in second for sports day and instead of just taking the time and doing nothing, my class and I decided that we were going to use this half hour to clean the community. This area, this is where most of them have to pass on a daily basis and they said you know, when we pass it really looks dirty. So we wanna get it cleaned so.”
