Cellular Plus Wins Rotary Raffle

Fifty-thousand dollars – that’s how much Cellular Plus Belize won in a raffle. The Rotary Club of Belize Sunrise played a willy-wonka golden ticket style raffle to raise funds for its projects. At the end of the raffle, fewer than eight hundred tickets were sold, which translates to some seventy to eighty thousand dollars. After the Sunrise Club settled its expenses, they made a profit of approximately twenty to twenty-five thousand dollars, having set aside the fifty Gs to give to the winner. Today, a representative of the company went to collect the winnings, which he says was won out of only two golden ticket chocolates purchased.

“We decide to support the worthy cause. We bought two tickets and we decided to do it as a company instead of as an individual.”

“Any idea where these monies will go to – will it be invested or used to do community projects?”

Kenrick Richards

“So far, we have discussed that we should invest majority of it and maybe enjoy a couple dollars.”

“The concept was made after Willy Wonka and I think it was created by two of our Rotarians. It wasn’t nothing new but it was a nice concept and we partnered with Charles Chocolate which is distributed by Grace Kennedy. We sold each chocolate for a hundred dollars, with the fifty thousand dollars being the prize.”

“Are you able to share with us what the proceeds from the raffle will be going towards? Any specific projects here in Belize City?”

Jose Ketz, President

“Well, yes, we have an ongoing project. We have a flagship project going on with the St John Vianney Primary School. We are doing a five-year development rehabilitation and we have the monies earmarked. Every time we start the year, sometimes we need up to a hundred or two hundred thousand dollars and so we try to raise monies. And as we go getting monies we start working on projects. So far I think we have invested a little over eighty-eighty-five thousand dollars in that school.”

Rotary Sunrise says that there will be two big fundraisers coming up including a barbecue sale and a cruise. So, you can support those charitable initiatives to give back to the community.
