U.D.P. in Charge in San Pedro; P.U.P. Says Not for Long

John Briceño

A new U.D.P. town council was sworn-in on Tuesday in San Pedro, amid a pending legal challenge being mounted by the People’s United Party.  Mayor Daniel Guerrero won by a very slim margin and was formally returned to office for another three-year term. But the fate of his current administration will be decided in a court of law since there are discrepancies with the outcome of the elections.  This afternoon, P.U.P. Party Leader John Briceño confirmed that the challenge was scheduled to be filed earlier today in the Supreme Court.

John Briceño, Leader of the Opposition

“We are convinced that something went wrong in San Pedro.  Our people have been going through all the data that we had box by box and there are a number of irregularities and one of the biggest one was this unaccounted for ballots.  So we are in the process of filing and the last report that I got is that we are supposed to be filing today.  If it’s been done so far, I don’t know, but as far as I know it’s supposed to be, it should be filed as a challenge today in the courts.”

Isani Cayetano

“Are you convinced sir that perhaps there is a case, in spite of what has been presented, in terms of the count and the documents corroborating that count?”

John Briceño

“Well, I have to depend on what our lawyers are telling us and if our lawyers believe that there is a case then I’m going to go by that advice.  So I go by their advice.”

Isani Cayetano

“Notwithstanding the fact that the U.D.P. town council for San Pedro was officially installed yesterday, correct?”

John Briceño

“It doesn’t matter, we’ll go to court and let the court decide and whatever decision the court makes we’re going to respect it.”

Should the P.U.P. be successful in its challenge, the party is seeking a complete re-election process in the heart of Belize Rural South.
